University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff student Tikel Davis was hired as a 2017 summer intern at Harrison Energy Partners in Little Rock, Arkansas. Harrison Energy Partners is currently the largest provider of commercial and industrial HVAC systems in Arkansas and seek to hire students in the engineering field. Davis is a senior majoring in Industrial Technology Management and Applied Engineering from Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
Davis started early developing her plan for success when she registered with the Office of Career Services in her freshman year. Since then, she has participated in several on and off campus activities and events that has helped to develop her networking, communication and leadership skills. For the last two years, Davis participated in the Office of Career Services’ premier program, Youth Motivation Task Force (YMTF), as a student leader and program participant. The role of YMTF is to prepare students to make a successful transition from college to the work place. Employers from business and government agencies are invited to engage UAPB students over a two and half (2 ½) day period through career development workshops, classroom presentations and one-on-one consultations.
In 2016, Davis was selected to attend the Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute in Washington, DC. She also attended the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Conference in Boston, Massachusetts in 2016 and in Kansas City, Missouri in 2017. Both conferences afforded her opportunities to network with employers, enhance her soft skills and interview for summer internship and Cooperative Education experiences. As a result of attending these conferences and her strong connection with her department and the Office of Career Services, Davis obtained several paid summer internships and Cooperative Education positions that have provided hands on experience in her field of study.
During the summer of 2015, Davis served as a mentor with the National Society for Black Engineers SEEK Program in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received a stipend of $2000 with housing and transportation paid by the organization. In 2016, she accepted a summer internship in the Transportation Operations Department with Norfolk Southern Railway Corporation in Harrison, Pennsylvania. In the fall of the same year, Davis was offered a Cooperative Education position with Mondi Bags USA in Pine Bluff, Arkansas as a Quality Analysis Intern. With this experience, she was able to work 20 hours per week while enrolled as a full-time student at the University. She was also able to receive up to six hours of academic credit for electives. The salary range for the positions she obtained was $13-22 per hour.
Davis is sticking to her plan for success. She is scheduled to graduate in May of 2018 and has a 3.0 or higher GPA, the work experience and a marketable resume to walk into the career of her choice.
