Jasmine Johnson, a graduating senior at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, recently received an acceptance letter to attend Xavier University College of Pharmacy in New Orleans, Louisiana. Johnson is a chemistry major and will be graduating in May. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin native is the daughter of Jennifer Allen and came to Pine Bluff on an academic scholarship. Johnson is a member of the Lady Lions basketball team and is involved in various organizations on campus including the STEM Academy, American Chemical Society, the Carolyn F. Blakely Honors College, Delta Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Alpha Chi National Honor Society, and the National College Athlete Honor Society.
Dr. Grant Wangila, interim chairperson of the department of Chemistry and Physics said, “Jasmine is a student that I have felt will go far in life. She listens, seeks advice and always follows through.”
Johnson’s journey to becoming a pharmacy professional has consisted mainly of following advice from STEM Academy faculty and the mentors in the department. Every summer since joining UAPB, she has gone on summer internships. As an NSF-STEM Academy Intern, Johnson conducted laboratory research on environmental fate and transport of silver nanoparticles funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health at Wright State University. The research involved synthesizing and characterizing Creighton colloidal silver nanoparticles for environmental studies and examination of the interaction between mineral surfaces and silver nanoparticles at various pH values by Raman and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Johnson’s other research was done at the University of Pittsburgh in the summer of 2016 and her topic was entitled “Dipeptidyl Peptidase 4 Inhibitors Augment the Activation of Cardiac Fibroblasts by SDF-1α Neuropeptide Y, and Peptide YY.”
Johnson is very excited to attend Xavier in the fall of 2017 and encourages everyone to “shoot for the moon, for even if you miss them, you’ll land among the stars.”
