The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Vesper Choir will present Messiah, by George Frederic Handel, at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 4, at the Hathaway-Howard Fine Arts Building. Free and open to the public, this year’s performance has special significance because the 2016-2017 school year is the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Vesper Choir.
The 63rd annual performance of this masterpiece signals the start of the celebration of the Christmas season at UAPB. The performance will be conducted by Vesper Choir Director Dr. Michael J. Bates. He will be assisted by Professor John Graham, director of bands, and Andee Book, voice instructor and assistant choir director.
Accompanying the Vesper Choir will be string players from Little Rock and Memphis areas, members of the UAPB bands, adjunct UAPB faculty member Judy Warner, flutist Donna Lee-Thomas, a music instructor in the Pine Bluff School District, and Tim Clark, Trombonist from St. Louis, Missouri. Professor Demarr Woods, a faculty member of the Music Department, will be the special Trumpet soloist.
Student soloists will include: YaShontae Joyner, junior music major from Moscow, Tennessee, Demarea Williams, graduating senior biology major from Dallas, Texas; Mary Rowe, freshman music major from Dermott, Arkansas; Robin Roberts (alto), senior music major from Memphis, Tennessee; Rodney Hutton (tenor), senior biology pre-med major from Chicago, Illinois; Keonte Bishop (tenor), senior criminal justice major from Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Ricky Wade, senior music major from Little Rock, Arkansas; and Gregory White (bass), senior music major from Kansas City, Missouri.
Special guest alumni soloists will be Robin Tisdale (soprano) of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Duane Jackson (bass), choir director at Jack Robey Junior High School.
