Dr. Uttam Kamar Deb has been appointed as assistant professor of aquaculture and fisheries economics for the Aquaculture/Fisheries Center of Excellence at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. In this position he will be charged with developing research-based solutions to problems faced by fish farmers and natural fisheries stakeholder groups in Arkansas and with creating a productive research program to improve economic management of aquaculture and natural fisheries systems.
In addition to teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in economics and other aquaculture/fisheries subject areas, Dr. Deb will publish peer-reviewed publications.
“Dr. Deb’s expertise stems from a rich variety of economics projects he conducted in different countries.” Dr. Rebecca Lochmann, interim chair of the UAPB Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries, said. “One of his first projects here is to analyze the economic impact of our Center. This will help us evaluate current activities and determine future directions for the Center.”
Dr. Deb has a doctorate degree in agricultural economics from the University of the Philippines Los Banos, and a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from Bangladesh Agricultural University.
Prior to this position, Dr. Deb worked as a principal scientist of economics for the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics in Greater Hyderabad, India and as additional director and head of the research division at the Centre for Policy Dialogue in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
During his education and work, Dr. Deb gained experience working in applied economic research related to food policy, agricultural trade, poverty and food security, dynamics of rural livelihood, science and technology policy, research evaluation, priority setting and impact assessment.
He has authored and co-authored more than 250 publications including journal articles, book chapters and policy briefs. His awards include the Emerald Literati Network Award for Excellence and the Dr. R T Doshi Prize from the Agricultural Economics Research Association in India.
