Homecoming celebration to begin October 9

cropped-uapbhc-updatedhdr1The annual Homecoming Celebration at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) will begin October 9 and end October 15. The theme for this year is “Behold the Black and Gold,” according to Dr. Charles Colen, Homecoming Committee chairperson.

The overview of activities includes events for students, alumni and the Pine Bluff community:

On Sunday, October 9, the celebration will begin with UAPB Day at Full Counsel Church, located 517 S. Cherry street in Pine Bluff. Sponsored by the Word of Faith Student Fellowship – UAPB Chapter, the free, public event begins at 10:30 a.m. and will feature the UAPB Vesper Choir and Marching Band. The day continues with the Gospel Extravaganza at 7:00 p.m. in the J.M. Ross auditorium of the Hathaway-Howard Fine Arts Building. Sponsored by the Student Government Association, the event will feature choirs from surrounding colleges and churches. Admission to the event is $5 for general public, and free to UAPB students with a valid ID. The Student Government Association will end the day’s activities with SGA at the Bell Tower immediately following the gospel extravaganza.

On Monday, October 10, the momentum continues with the Black and Gold Pride Rally at 10:30 a.m. in the Kenneth L. Johnson, Sr., Health Physical Education Recreation (HPER) Complex. All attendees are invited to wear their black and gold, bring their pompons and school spirit.

On Tuesday, October 11, UAPB Chancellor, Dr. Laurence B. Alexander, will host Tower Talk at W.E. O’Bryant Bell Tower at 11 a.m. Activities will continue with Senior Stunt Night at 6:00 p.m. in the J.M. Ross auditorium of the Hathaway-Howard Fine Arts Building. Sponsored by the Senior Class, admission to the event is $4 with a canned good and $5 without.

On Wednesday, October 12, the mass communications department will host a screening of “Who Are You Rooting For?!,” a documentary of the 2015 Homecoming Celebration at 2:00 p.m. The screening will be held in Cross-Phipps auditorium of Caldwell Hall. Later that evening, Ashleigh Marie Tate will be crowned the 87th Miss University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff during the Coronation Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. in the HPER Complex arena. The Coronation Ball will begin immediately after at the same location. Formal attire is required.

For alumni, the Homecoming Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held Thursday, October 13, at 8:30 a.m. at Harbor Oaks Golf Course. Registration information can be obtained by calling the Office of Alumni Affairs at (870) 575-8499.

The annual Yard Jamz will be held later that day from 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. in the L.A. Davis, Sr. Student Union. Sponsored by Wal-Mart and the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, the event will include a variety of foods, vendors, and games. The Marching Musical Machine of the Midsouth (M4) marching band will conclude the day with a bonfire at 10:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the HPER Complex.

On Friday, October 14, the Annual Alumni Assembly will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the HPER Arena. Following the assembly, the National Alumni Association will host an Alumni Awards Luncheon in the STEM Conference Center. Tickets for the event are $35 per person and can be purchased by calling (870) 536-2309.

Friday evening, doors will open at 5 p.m. in the HPER Complex arena for the Greek Show, sponsored by National Pan Hellenic Council. Tickets are available for purchase at the UAPB bookstore, Fathers and Sons Clothier, and Ugly Mike’s Records in Little Rock. Early birds can take advantage of discounts if they act quickly. While supplies last, tickets will be $15 /person October 1-8; $20/person October 10-14; and $25 at the door.

The Alumni Hall of Fame Banquet will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Pine Bluff Convention Center Ballroom. Tickets are $75/person and can be purchased by calling the National Alumni Association at (870) 536-2309.

On the day of the game, Saturday, October 15, the Annual Homecoming Parade will be held at 10:00 a.m. and will begin on Martin street, proceed onto Main street, turn right onto 11th street, left at Convention Center Drive, left onto 5th street, and end at 5th and Cherry streets. Parade applications can be picked up at the Welcome Center or downloaded via www.uapb.edu/homecoming.

Pre-game activities will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Golden Lion Stadium. Kick-off time is 2:30 p.m. where the Golden Lions will play the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University. Tickets for the game can be purchased by calling the ticket office at (870) 575-8601 or online at www.uapblionsroar.com . The 2016 Homecoming Celebration will conclude with a Band Marching Festival at 6:00 p.m. in the HPER Arena.
