The application deadline for the Learning Institute and Opportunities for New Students (LIONS) program has been extended to May 16, 2016. With 400 spaces available, students may be eligible to receive a scholarship for tuition, room and meals. A book award of up to $500 for the second summer session may also be available to enrolled students.
The LIONS program, which is in session from July 5th to August 5th, prepares admitted UAPB students for college academic rigor. Benefits of attending the program include:
- Completion of six credits of English and algebra
- Academic tutoring and enrichment sessions for English and algebra courses
- “College Knowledge” workshops and seminars to ensure a successful transition to college life
- On-campus housing
- Meeting other new freshman and UAPB faculty and staff
- Developing supportive relationships and lasting new friendships
“LIONS participants benefit greatly because they can complete their foundation courses during the program, and their experiences contribute to a more academically prepared, socially mature and knowledgeable first-year student,” said Carolyn Mills, LIONS Program Director.
“As a result of this intense college preparatory program LIONS are retained at a greater rate and graduate in fewer semesters than non-participating UAPB students.”
Applications to the LIONS Program are available at www.uapb.edu/lionsprogram and should be accompanied by admission to UAPB, campus housing and a completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the summer session of the 2015-2016 academic year.
Students and parents can contact Carolyn Mills at 870.575.8362 for more information about LIONS and to verify admission status to the program.
LIONS is sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Post-secondary Education, Strengthening Institutions, Title III, Part B, Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program.
