Arkansas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annual conference set for April 14-15

The Arkansas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (ArAFCS) annual conference will be April 14-15 at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff STEM Academy Conference Center located at 1530 L. A. “Prexy” Davis Drive. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 14, and 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 15.

The educational event is intended for family and consumer sciences students and professionals working in education, service, medical, business and related fields, said Dr. Janette R. Wheat, president-elect for the ArAFCS and chief executive officer for the 2016 conference. The event will feature educational presentations on family and consumer sciences, research and poster sessions and a professional awards and scholarships ceremony.

The agenda for Thursday, April 14, includes presentations on primary disease prevention, wellness promotion and design within the fashion industry in China, tours of the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas and the UAPB Value-Added Product Laboratory/Experimental Kitchen and a dramatic presentation by the UAPB Theatre Department.

The agenda for Friday, April 15, includes presentations on sustainability in the textiles/apparel industry and advocacy and research in the family and consumer sciences profession. John Proctor and Lucas Armstrong, both authors and alumni of UAPB, will be the keynote speakers.

Participants have the option of attending one or both days of the conference. Full conference registration for professionals for both days is $65. To attend only a single day, professionals will pay $20 for Thursday or $45 for Friday.

The cost for students for both days is $40 or $20 for a single day. Registration fees cover the cost of conference sessions, refreshments and lunch on Thursday and Friday.

Participants are asked to preregister by March 18 and no later than March 31. To preregister, complete the ArAFCS conference registration form and mail it to Dr. Janette R. Wheat, President-Elect of the Arkansas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Department of Human Sciences, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, 1200 N. University Drive, Mail Slot 4971, Pine Bluff, AR 71601.
