Dr. Janette Wheat, associate professor for the Department of Human Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), was recently inducted into the Council for Accreditation (CFA) for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). The CFA acts as the peer review board responsible for evaluating family and consumer sciences departments in higher education for their accreditation.

In this role, Dr. Wheat will help develop policies and procedures to evaluate the extent to which university family and consumer sciences departments comply with standards to ensure initial and continuing accreditation status. She will also organize professional development activities and will promote the AAFCS accreditation program to undergraduate family and consumer science programs that could be eligible for accreditation.

Dr. Wheat served as accreditation director for the UAPB Department of Human Sciences between 2008 and 2012. Her leadership helped secure the department’s re-accreditation by the AAFCS through 2022.

“I believe my experience as accreditation director for the department and the systemic training I received from participating in several AAFCS educational workshop sessions will allow me to make meaningful contributions to the AAFCS-CFA,” Dr. Wheat said. “AAFCS accreditation is a badge of honor for the Department of Human Sciences, the School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences and our university as a whole.”
