Incoming freshmen have the chance to acclimate to college life and earn college credits in the 2015 Learning Institute and Opportunities for New Students (LIONS) program at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). The deadline has been extended to May 8 to complete the admissions process to UAPB and the Program. Students will receive a LIONS scholarship for tuition and fees and room and board. A book award of up to $500 is also available to enrolled students.
The five week program (July 6 – August 7) assists students admitted to UAPB for the fall semester who want to get a jump-start on their college career at UAPB. Participants receive academic tutoring and attend college orientation, academic and professional workshops, and personal and social success seminars for making a successful transition to college life.
Since 2008, 307 students have participated in the LIONS Program with a fall semester enrollment rate of 97.1%. LIONS complete their foundation courses during the summer program and benefit from a set of experiences that contribute greatly to a more academically prepared, socially mature and knowledgeable first-year student. As a result of this intense college preparatory program LIONS are retained at a greater rate and graduate in fewer semesters than non-participating UAPB students.
Sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Post-secondary Education, Strengthening Institutions, Title III, Part B, Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and the Walton Family Foundation, there are spaces for 300 incoming freshmen according to Ms. Carolyn Mills, director of the program.
Applications to the LIONS program are available at www.uapb.edu/lionsprogram and should be accompanied by admission to UAPB, campus housing and a completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the summer session of the 2014-2015 academic year. Call Ms. Mills at 870-575-8362 for more information and to verify your admissions status to the LIONS Program.
