Governor Hutchinson to deliver commencement address


PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Governor Asa Hutchinson will deliver the keynote address for spring commencement exercises for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) spring graduating class. The free, public event will be held Saturday, May 9 at 3:00 p.m. at the Pine Bluff Convention Center arena.

Asa Hutchinson was sworn in as the 46th Governor of Arkansas on January 13, 2015, promising to bring more jobs and economic growth to his native state. He has spent his first weeks in office making good on those promises.

During his first full day on the job, Governor Hutchinson called the executives of six companies to let them know Arkansas wanted their business.

He has already fulfilled his pledge to lower taxes and to create a more business-friendly climate. He has forged a consensus on the funding for the private option healthcare initiative through 2016 and to create a task force to recommend future changes.

Governor Hutchinson has worked in a bipartisan way to require computer science in every high school. He crafted a solution to prison overcrowding, refunded our parole system and increased support for alternative sentencing for non-violent offenders.

Before being elected governor, Asa Hutchinson served in a variety of posts in the private and public sector. He served as Director of the Drug Enforcement Administration and as the first Undersecretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Voters in Arkansas’s Third District also elected him to Congress three times.

A graduate of the University of Arkansas law school, Asa Hutchinson, at age 31, was appointed by President Reagan as the nation’s youngest U.S. attorney. Asa has spent the majority of his career in the private sector as a small business owner, lawyer and entrepreneur. He serves on the board of directors of two companies and as advisor to numerous others. Asa’s record in business and public service gives him a unique background to serve the people of Arkansas as Governor.

He and his wife Susan have been married 41 years. They have four children and five grandchildren.
