Local partnerships increase opportunities for UAPB students

shaking handsThe Office of Career Services at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff recently partnered with several businesses in Pine Bluff to support the cooperative education and internship program. In 2013, a strategic plan was implemented through a Title III Grant to increase the number of local opportunities within Pine Bluff and Jefferson County. The partnerships are a result of the dedicated work of Career Services Job Developer Maurice Carlton.

“By joining professional organizations and participating in community activities, Mr. Carlton has created a win-win for our community,” said Shirley Cherry, director of the Office of Career Services. “These partnerships are helping to create an educated, trained workforce that will benefit Pine Bluff and Jefferson County’s economic growth.”

The following students were chosen to participate in Cooperative Education or internship positions: Xavier Bass, Computer Science, National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR); Kiara Chatman, Accounting, Mondi Pine Bluff-Sack Kraft Paper; Marquise Ealy, Industrial Technology Management and Applied Engineering, The Strong Company; Lawrence Flowers, Industrial Technology Management and Applied Engineering, Arkansas Department of Correction; Jarrion Harris, Industrial Technology Management and Applied Engineering, The Strong Company; Kendall Harris, Industrial Technology Management and Applied Engineering, Evergreen Packaging; Jonathan Johnson, Business Marketing, E.C. Barton Company; Takeslesha Johnson, Business Marketing, The Strong Company; Christopher Jones, Industrial Technology Management and Applied Engineering, Evergreen Packaging; Kevin Smith, Industrial Technology Management and Applied Engineering, Evergreen Packaging.

“Cooperative Education and internship positions will increase UAPB students’ marketability and potential for full-time employment upon graduation,” said Carlton. “We are excited about partnering with local businesses.”
