Dr. Brenda A. Martin to head UAPB Human Sciences Department

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Dr. Brenda A. Martin has been named chair of the Department of Human Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She will provide leadership to the department that includes four units – food service/restaurant management; human development and family studies; merchandising, textiles and design; and nutrition and dietetics.

In this position, Dr. Martin is also responsible for oversight of UAPB’s Child Development Center and the Human Sciences Cafeteria.

“I am pleased to welcome Dr. Martin to this position,” Dr. James O. Garner Jr., dean/director of the School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences, said. “She will play a vital role in leading the academic and research programs and managing recruitment, assessment and retention programs in the Department of Human Sciences.”

Prior to this position, Dr. Martin was an associate professor at UAPB where she coordinated the human sciences education program. She taught classes, advised students, served on various committees and provided leadership for the NCATE/CAEP accreditation and teacher licensure. From 2005 to 2010, she was a school improvement consultant for the Arkansas Department of Education where she evaluated education programs for compliance to association standards.

Dr. Martin has a doctorate degree in workforce education and development from The Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree in vocational education from Western Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in home economics-fashion merchandising from UAPB. Her professional background includes program evaluation, consultant work, research and grant writing.
