PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Dr. Rebecca Lochmann, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Aquaculture/Fisheries Center fish nutritionist, and Dr. Carole Engle, the center’s director, have been elected to key positions in the World Aquaculture Society. Dr. Lochmann is president-elect and Dr. Engle is a director on the organization’s board.

Founded in 1969, the World Aquaculture Society has more than 3,000 members in about 100 countries representing the global aquaculture community. The organization has chapters in the United States, Japan, Korea, Latin American and Caribbean region, and the Asian-Pacific region. Through its diverse membership and international networks, WAS provides leadership for enhanced international communications, collaboration and information exchange.

A member of WAS since 1989, Dr. Lochmann has served as director and president of the U.S. chapter and currently serves as secretary of WAS and Chair of the Policies, Rules and Regulations committee. Other committee activities (U.S. Chapter and/or WAS) include Publications, Student Activities, Awards, Elections, Finance and Long-Range Planning and ad hoc efforts to increase WAS membership in under-represented countries.

Her vision is to strengthen the ability of WAS to promote and expand responsible aquaculture worldwide, by improving communication and coordination of efforts among different sectors of WAS and external stakeholders.

“This is a transitional and exciting time in our organization – we have identified and begun to implement activities designed to make us a truly global organization,” she said. “Many challenges remain, but WAS is well-positioned to become the premier organization for aquaculture professionals. To do this, we must grow and diversify our membership while working to ensure that WAS membership remains valuable and relevant to our current members.”

Dr. Engle has been a member of WAS since 1988 and is a past-president and former director of the U.S. Aquaculture Society (USAS), a chapter of WAS. She was active on the USAS board during the development of student subunits and encouraged students at UAPB to form one of the first subunits. Dr. Engle used her involvement and leadership in both WAS and the International Association of Aquaculture Economics and Management (IAAEM) to foster a closer relationship and to engage more economists with aquaculture scientists of WAS.

Her research focus is catfish production economics and farm management, catfish marketing, optimal management of catfish farms, aquaculture economics and marketing. She currently serves on several advisory councils including the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Advisory Committee, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Science Advisory Board, and Technical Committee for the Southern Regional Aquaculture Center.
