house2PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The second in a series of summer and fall southeast Arkansas housing workshops is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 10 a.m. at the Portland Community Center in Portland, Arkansas.

Sponsored by the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Small Farm Program in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development agency, future workshops will be conducted in Chicot, Desha and Drew counties.

The workshops are designed to help residents use Rural Development’s home improvement program (504) and the home purchasing or building program (502). Rural Development also provides grants of up to $7,200 to seniors for home improvements to help them stay in the homes.

Rural Development has partnered with the Arkansas Weatherization Assistance (AWA) Program, operated by the Jefferson County Economic Opportunities Commission, Inc. AWA providers install energy efficiency measures in homes of qualifying homeowners free of charge.

“These are not expensive upgrades; the average expenditure is $6,904, but they are effective,” says Dr. Henry English, head of the UAPB Small Farm Program. Energy savings pays for the upgrade within a few years.
The workshop is free. For more information, contact Travis Collins, UAPB program aide and meeting coordinator, at (870) 355-7007. The Portland Community Center is located at 102 Ash Street in Portland.
