PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Merchandising, Textiles and Design Program (MTD) at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff will offer a Precollege MTD Institute this summer. Led by UAPB instructors Kalari Turner and Dr. Kaye Crippen, the institute will introduce students to fashion, fabric dyeing, career options and more. Breakfast will be provided at 8 a.m. and the workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 17-21 on the UAPB campus. Participants must be entering the 9th through 12th grades. Recent high school graduates will also be accepted.

The first part of the institute will focus on trends, fashion, style and industrial sewing, Turner said.

“This session will introduce primary body type classifications and the importance of personal style,” she said. “The movement of fashion will also be discussed.” Students will also explore methods used to forecast trends and complete activities related to trends, fashion and style. Fashion illustration will also be covered.

Participants will learn about industrial lockstitch sewing machines and they will gain experience in pattern cutting and marking and sewing seams, Turner said.

During the second part of the workshop, participants will learn how to wash natural wool and dye it using Kool-Aid, Dr. Crippen said.

“The students will do hands-on dyeing after the demonstration,” she said, adding that they will also make felt from wool. A discussion of the scientific principles related to each will be presented.

Students will make a bleach-out deconstructed denim sample and learn the process for making recycled fiber from bottle polymers. “Students will examine textiles made from these fibers and learn more about environmental impacts of the clothes they wear,” Dr. Crippen said.

A discussion of careers in merchandising, textiles and design will cover various careers in the field.

The registration fee for the institute is $100 and it includes breakfast, lunch and a snack.
Lunch will be provided as part of a nutrition demonstration. The deadline to register for the institute is June 13. For more information, contact Kalari Turner at 501-492-9220 or email turnerk@uapb.edu or contact Dr. Kaye Crippen at 870-575-8367 or email crippenk@uapb.edu .
