The church is located off the I40 Expressway at 1401 Calvary Drive. The Arkansas Choral Society is conducted by Dr. Kent Skinner, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and is Arkansas’s oldest continually operating musical organization. The organization partners with Arkansas college and high school choruses and annually performs all or a portion of Handel’s “Messiah”. Admission to the performance is $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for children.
The Vesper Choir will also present the 59th annual performance of Handel’s Messiah Sunday, December 2, at 3:00pm in the John M. Ross Theatre the Hathaway-Howard Fine Arts Building on UAPB’s campus.
The Vesper Choir is the select singing ensemble at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The Choir has been in existence for more than seventy years, having been organized by Professor Ariel Lovelace in the 1940s. Professor Shelton McGee conducted the Vesper Choir for more than 40 years before his passing in 1999.
Dr. Michael J. Bates, Interim Chair of the UAPB Music Department and Professor of Music, has conducted the Vesper Choir since 1999. Since that time the Vesper Choir has continued the tradition of performing choral music of the highest quality. In addition to annual performance tours that have taken the choir across this country, in 2006 the Vesper Choir toured Italy and performed concerts in Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan, including performances at the Vatican and at historic St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice.
