Ashanti Brown, a 2011 University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) graduate majoring in Business Management took advantage of the services offered through the Office of Career Services. Her efforts really paid off when she obtained an internship with the Army Contracting Command at the Pine Bluff Arsenal during the summer of 2010. What started as an internship opportunity ended as a permanent position. Brown was allowed to continue in the position and received Cooperative Education credit hours until she graduated and was offered a permanent position at Rock Island Arsenal as a Contract Specialist in Rock Island, Illinois.
“Registering with Career Services was one of the primary reasons for attending [UAPB],” said Ashanti. “From the beginning, they were very active in providing information about businesses related to my major who were interviewing for internships.”
Ashanti pointed out key personnel such as Shirley Cherry, assistant director of Career Services in particular, was very active in making sure that her resume was updated and provided to potential employers.
“If it wasn’t for the relationship that Career Services had developed with them and Ms. Cherry providing my resume, I would not have the job that I have today. Because of the staff’s genuine interest in the future of students, I graduated without the worry of searching for a professional position- it was already mapped out.”The Office of Career Services prepares students for the transition from college to the real world of work. Students are encouraged to register with the Office of Career Services and take full advantage of the many services and activities that are offered for career development and advancement. Most recently, Career Services launched Golden Opportunities Career Portal which gives students 24 hour access to the Career Management System. Students are able to update profiles, upload resumes, search and apply for jobs, schedule appointments with the Career Services staff and sign up for employer information sessions. Employers also have access to post jobs, search resumes, request information sessions, and sign up for career fairs.
